Jewish Family Services Houston hosts an annual celebration, JFS Live. 2022 – Thursday night, November 17, at Hilton America to raise funds for programs and services.

Each year, the agency offers live entertainment billed as a “life-changing event” for both participating donors and the clients JFS serves.

At this year’s gala, let the smokin’ hot music fill your ears and tap your toes as participants in “Jazz it Up” by acclaimed American trombonist Delfiyo Marsalis and New Orleans soul vocalist Tonya Boyd. I promise.

When the community supports the work of JFS, such talent makes the gala an exciting and memorable evening.

The jazz-themed idea came from Louisiana native Carolyn Kaplan. She and her husband Jay Kaplan receive her prestigious Joan Alexander Chesed Award at JFS Live!Jan Zuber Miller receives the Shirley & Allen Becker Leadership Award.

Amegy Bank, represented by CEO Steve Stevens and Founder Walter Johnson, will receive the JFS Houston Community Investment Award. Joy and Joe Kaplan are event chairpersons.

Dozens of volunteers help with various aspects of the event. Celine Kaplan and Jean Mintz serve as honorary presidents. The auction co-chairs are Shayna Andrews, Jill Adels Klaff and Jan Zuber Miller. Laura and Bruce Shelby are Chairs of the Finance Committee.

Marsalis hails from the Marsalis family of New Orleans, the famous “first family of jazz.” At the age of 17, Marsalis began his career as a producer. To date, he has produced over 120 of his recordings and has won a Grammy Award. A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a double BA in Music Performance and Production, Marsalis also holds a Master of Arts in Jazz Performance from the University of Louisville. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the College of New England.

In 2008, he formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, an ensemble focused on preserving important jazz traditions such as riffing, New Orleans polyphony, and spontaneous arranging. As a trombonist, Marsalis has toured with Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and led his own group. I will accompany JFS LiVE! by members of his group.

Marsalis is not only highly regarded as one of the top musicians in New Orleans’ famous jazz scene, but he also has a strong sense of community responsibility.

With a passion for educating young people, Marsalis founded Uptown Music Theater in New Orleans in 2000. His non-profit organization empowers young people through musical theater training.

He has written 16 musicals to date, based on historical events or as a means of bringing communities together. The impact of this training continues to impact more than 2,500 New Orleans youth.

In addition, he has composed over 90 songs that introduce children to jazz through musical theater, and delivered Cool School’s Swinging, a soft introduction to jazz workshops, to over 5,000 students nationwide. Swinging with the Cool School premiered in 2006 at the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans as an experimental music therapy program.

Vocalist Boyd, the daughter of a preacher, has been singing since childhood. Boyd is a classically trained vocalist who learned her vocal performance in college, although most of her musical training was with her director of middle school and high school bands.

Her love of singing and incredible talent led her to join Adam Levine’s team for the 2015 season of NBC’s ‘The Voice’ where she performed well as a top 20 finalist. Today, Boyd is executive her director of the Rise My Child Foundation, whose mission is to help children from the age of 3 to her 18 in the arts. She also conducts the New Orleans Citywide Youth Choir and facilitates vocal workshops around the world.

The community is invited to support JFS LiVE! 2022 Jazz it Up. Required to provide JFS with unlimited yearly support and continued critical service.
