Review: Do You Really Want to Waste Your Time? Watch Mac and Rita | Entertainment

The movie Mac & Rita is lazy filmmaking and a tired old concept, two elements that no one needs on screen, plus grandma chic.

In effect, no one involved in this film should be celebrated in any way for breaking the bridge between Hollywood and the elderly, or for the shocking misuse of Diane Keaton’s considerable skill. .

“Mac & Lita,” which hits cinemas on Friday, takes the traditional body-swap concept (“Big,” “Freaky Friday,” “13 Going on 30,” “Jumanji,” etc.) and makes it even worse. increase.

This time, you’re a 30-year-old writer with a perfect apartment and a small dog who undergoes crude past-life regression treatment and ends up becoming a 70-year-old hipster granny. A poor role where she’s almost just reeling in a series of flat, nonsensical scenes.

Written by Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh, it has the science and supernatural plot and atmosphere of 80’s movies like Weird Science and Back to the Future, and is a romantic comedy, mismatched tale. Add a love interest to spice up your failures. Assumption. Learning to embrace age gracefully, everyone wants to be happy in their own right.

It begins with author Mac (played nicely by Elizabeth Lail) struggling with her second book and having to make low-cost Instagram posts for money. She feels she’s out of step with her friends in fashionable Los Angeles, among them her memorably good Taylor Page.

If you’re wondering what happens in this movie, the narration will help. Presto, it becomes a reality.

Keaton takes over the roughly 20-minute mark as Rita, but she’s usually the butt of a joke rather than the creator. or awkwardly peter out.

This is the movie that Keaton would trip over if there was a pool. If there is wine, she will guzzle it and say inappropriate things. The low point of the film is set in a Pilates studio, ending with a montage of Keaton using Resistance her straps in a totally unexpected way, with Faith her plant.

“This is a real nightmare. I have different hair. It seems really weird,” she says. “It feels like a well-coated wire or something.” And after losing her four decades in ten minutes, she’s happily trying on her clothes.

In some ways, we have to acknowledge in part that Keaton himself created this monster long before it was scripted. She’s been hailed as the inspiration for the so-called “coast granny” look that’s all the rage among the cardigan-and-linen-pants-wearing crowd. ?

The young writer in granny initially tries to combat her instant aging with various procedures and youthful remedies, but even in the horrifying scene where she becomes obsessed with “mushrooms”, she does something about age. come to understand. That’s exactly where I am: I’m old.

So why did this movie seem like such an insult?

Recently, there was an outcry about the movie “Batgirl.” Although the film was fully produced, it was never released due to creative and financial calculations. It is puzzling why that fate was not destined for “Mac and Rita”.

The Gravitas Ventures release, Mack & Rita, is rated PG-13 for “some drug use, sexual references, and language.” Recording time: 94 minutes. No stars out of 4.

MPAA definition of PG-13: Parents beware. Some content may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.
