Lance started two games and appeared in six during his rookie season. He had 41 of 71 passes (57.7%) for his 603 yards, 5 touchdowns his passing, 2 interceptions and his rating of 97.3 passers. Lance had 38 carries for 168 yards (4.4 yards per carry) and one TD.

“I can understand why bettors are endorsing Trey Lance to win the NFL MVP. I never expected him to reach this level,” said Meyer. “For Lance, it’s pretty amazing that Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers combined have nearly tripled MVP handles.”

The 49ers paid a high price to select Lance with the 2021 No. 3 pick.

To draft Lance, San Francisco traded four draft picks, including the 2021 No. 12 pick. This includes what the Dallas Cowboys used to pick linebacker Micah his Parsons.

Lance has been impressive in camp as he prepares to take over the 49ers’ offense, but players who win MVP so early in their careers are rare.

After moving from Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan are excited about Trey Lance’s potential.

Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown is the only rookie to win MVP, and that was 65 years ago, according to FOX Sports research.

Only five players have been named MVP in their second professional season, according to FOX Sports research, most recently Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (2019) and Kansas City Chiefs guard Patrick. It was Mahomes (2018).

Others were Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino (1984), Houston Oilers running back Earl Campbell (1979) and Brown (1958).

Lance’s advantage comes from Huddle’s talent, which includes tight end George Kittle, receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Elijah Mitchell.

“When he increased his MVP odds to 200/1, it was expected to start a quarterback for a team with top 10 Super Bowl odds and double-digit regular season wins.” He has the great attacking spirit of coach Kyle Shanahan and the first-class weaponry of Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.

“So he was certainly poised for success and he was a very exciting prospect coming out of North Dakota. The odds are also not really seen. The odds are now down to 50/1 but bettors are still lining up for Lance.”
