With Anthony Martial currently injured and Cristiano Ronaldo’s future in doubt, United are looking for more options up front. They remain interested in RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesco, but find it a tough deal.

Ten Hag are therefore keen to sign Arnautovic, who can play wide or middle.

The Dutchman was asked about the 33-year-old after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford.

“I think there are 250 players involved or linked to Manchester United this pre-season, so I won’t name them,” he said. “We have two strikers, maybe a third and we have Marcus Rashford.

“We thought of him as a striker, but he played really well on the left side in pre-season and we had two really good chances on the left side today.

“So I think it was the right decision to do it this way. But the typical number 9 wasn’t available today.”

Arnautovic has scored 15 goals in 34 games for Bologna

After two years in Shanghai, China, Arnautovic returned to Europe last year, scoring 15 goals in 34 appearances for Bologna.

United’s interest in the Austrian player can be explained by a previous connection with Steve McLaren, one of Ten Hag’s assistants at Old Trafford.

Arnautovic was playing for FC Twente when McLaren took charge of the Eredivisie club in the summer of 2008 and became a regular. Ten Hag also spent time in Holland where he was McClaren’s No.2.
