Kathy Hilton sparks backlash after mistaking Lizzo for 'Precious'

‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Kathy Hilton has been called fatphobic and racist online after she mistook singer Lizzo for the lead character in the 2009 film ‘Precious’. While appearing on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live,” Hilton was tasked with guessing who the on-screen celebrity was in a game called “Will Kathy Know Them?” rice field.

The 63-year-old Hilton has guessed wrong many times and has never been able to pinpoint Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or Justin Timberlake. But an awkwardness ensued when Cohen pulled a photo of Grammy-winner Lizzo. That answer made Crystal Kang Minkoff, Cohen and Hilton’s “Housewives” co-star and guest on The Wednesday Show, burst into laughter.

Hilton may have mistaken Lizzo, 34, for the famous character played by Gabourey Sidibe in the 2009 Oscar-winning drama Precious. But it’s also possible that she mistook the singer for Precious Lee, a 32-year-old model Minkoff, 39, tried to correct her blunder, telling Hilton:

“That’s what I call her,” Hilton added. “Her nickname is precious to me.”

Lizzo’s fans were quick to react on Twitter, criticizing Hilton for comparing Lizzo to another plus-sized black celebrity. Host Nina Parker wrote on Twitter, “Black women are not here to be the butts of jokes.”

Internet personality Karen Allen also tweeted, “When ‘Precious’ was released, many people used the character’s name as a derogatory label, promoting fatphobia and bullying. So no. , I don’t think that’s funny. Lizzo had to stick to her job and watch her be called Precious in front of millions of people on live TV.”

Another tweeted: “That’s fatphobia and racism to me. She and Gabby are not alike at all, but you can call her Precious too. It’s a real person, not a character.” Lizzo needs to spit out all these mf’s.”

Some defended Hilton by saying that his mistake was an honest mistake. “Everybody needs to calm down about Kathy calling Lizzo Precious. None of the women recognized,” one fan tweeted.

“Supermodel Precious Lee and music artist Lizzo are gorgeous women with striking similarities in appearance,” wrote another. But Crystal and @Andy’s lingering laughter was mean and childish.”

Neither Lizzo, Lee nor Sidibe have publicly commented on Hilton’s interview.
