California’s New Monkeypox Commission

Last week, both the Biden administration and Governor Newsom declared monkeypox a public health emergency. The declaration will allow access to emergency funding to strengthen and streamline vaccine clinics, treatments, and outreach, especially to the most vulnerable communities. Newsom says California will build on infrastructure from the pandemic. But his early response to this new public health crisis has been criticized for repeating the same mistakes he made with COVID-19 in 2020. Vaccines and antiviral treatments for monkeypox already exist, but their availability nationwide is limited. This again creates a “catch up” reaction. Vaccines have long queues and test results take so long that they are almost useless. It is very painful and in extreme cases hospitalization may be required.state senator Scott Wiener From the beginning, I was concerned and critical of the public health response.
