Three Monk Student Athletes Selected as Winners of the Big East Sports Excellence Award

Providence, Rhode Island- Big East Conference today announced the winners of the 2021-22 Sports Excellence Awards [July 26]Recognizes community services as well as academic and athletic achievements. Of the total 22 winners, 3 are representatives of Providence College. Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Massachusetts) Winner of the Men’s Cross-Country Award, Alex O’Neill (Ennis, Ireland) insists on approval of women’s outdoor trucks, Matt Grillo (Setauket, NY) represented men’s lacrosse.

The Sports Excellence Award is awarded to one student athlete in each sport sponsored by BIG EAST, based on educational background, athletic praise or performance, and volunteer services to the community. Student athletes who have achieved junior academic status and achieved an average minimum cumulative grade of 3.00 are eligible. Winners will be selected by the Big East Faculty Athletics Council.

Rocha has won the BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award twice. He has been selected by the BIG EAST All-Academic Team five times and is a graduate of Summa Cum Laude. In 2021, Rocha was awarded the Providence College Male Athletes of the Year for individual sports. In his athlete’s achievements, he finished fourth in the 2021 Big East Cross Country Championships, earned the All Big East honor, and was named to the Big East Athlete of the Week twice during the 2021 season. .. Rocha also finished 61, finishing 9th in the NCAA Northeast Regional in 2021.st After winning a large selection of individuals at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Rocha has become the first NCAA personalized monk since 2016 on the men’s team of Providence.

O’Neill is a three-time Big East All-Academic Team Selection at Providence College. During the 2022 outdoor track season, O’Neill was a member of the Big East Championship winning 4 x 800 meters relay team, setting a record for the facility at the event (8: 35.25) and earning the All Big East honor. did. .. O’Neill was also a member of the 4×800 relay team, which won the 800-meter event at Friar Invitational and set a school record at Penn Relays. In addition, she is an 800-meter finalist in the BIG EAST Championship and qualified for the NCAA’s first round at the event.

Grillo was an impressive season for the men’s lacrosse program. During his senior season in 2022, Grillo set a career record with goals (36) and points (45) to go with nine assists.He is in 14th placeth At Providence College, he scored 135 points with 109 goals and 26 assists. Grillo is one of only five players in the history of the program, scoring more than 100 goals in his career, and is ranked third in terms of score in Providence (109). Grillo was named to the All Big East Second Team in 2022 and appeared twice on the Big East All Tournament Team during his career (2019, 2021). Grillo is also good in the classroom, having three appearances on the Dean list and an athletic director honor student in each of the eight semesters. He became Chi Alpha Sigma and graduated from Cum Laude’s Providence in May.
