West Windsor Arts Council Announces Martian Project Sculpture Design Contest

(West Windsor, NJ) — It was almost 85 years ago when Orson Welles’ infamous radio broadcast declared that aliens from Mars had landed in West Windsor, NJ, causing a national uproar. . To celebrate this upcoming anniversary, west windsor art, West Windsor Historical Societyheld a sculpture design contest!

We encourage people of all ages and skill levels to imagine what these interstellar creatures might look like as they move into their new home in West Windsor, New Jersey. Entries are encouraged to draw inspiration from the audio commentary by Orson Welles, but can also come up with a creative and friendly twist on how these Martians are portrayed.

The designs will be collected until September 9, 2022, after which a public vote will be held to determine which design will be sculpted as the town’s official mascot. The winning design will be provided to a local artist as part of another design contest in spring 2023 to be used to create blank fiberglass sculptures for decoration.

The winning sculpture designer will receive a prize of $500. Contest details and full parameters can be found at: WestWindsorArts.org.

Stay tuned for the unveiling of the winning designs at the fundraising cocktail reception on October 30, 2022 at the historic Schenck Farmstead in West Windsor. The event will also feature talks by his A. Brad Schwartz, author of “Broadcast Hysteria,” farm tours, bonfires, food and drink.

West Windsor Arts is also looking for community members to join the Mars Project Planning Committee. Volunteers help with everything from event planning, logistics, fundraising, and location selection. For more information, please contact info@westwindsorarts.org.
