Mayor Turner Hosts 10th Annual Liftoff Houston Startup Business Plan Competition

July 27, 2022 — Applications are now open for the Liftoff Houston Startup Business Plan Competition. In this competition, three winners will each receive $10,000 as seed his money to fund their entrepreneurial dreams. Applications must be received by 2:00 pm on Friday, August 19th.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the competition is sponsored by Capital One Bank and administered by the Houston Public Library (HPL) and the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO). Since its inception, Capital One has invested more than $280,000 of his start-up capital in his three category winners of innovation, products and services.

“For a decade, Liftoff Houston has empowered participants to achieve economic mobility through entrepreneurship,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. We have contributed to our community by creating and providing much-needed goods and services.”

To be eligible to participate in the Contest, applicants must reside and operate within the city limits of Houston. The business must be for-profit, have been in operation for less than one year, and have no more than $10,000 in verifiable revenue. Those who are not eligible to compete may participate in the Educational Pathway, which provides access to all educational and mentorship components of the program.

Once approved to attend Liftoff Houston, participants attend four months of workshops covering key business topics such as business planning, marketing, fundraising and pitching. Entrants will receive additional support from professional mentors from SCORE Houston and Capital One Bank to further refine their business plans necessary to advance to the final round of the competition.

The event culminates in Pitch Day on November 5th, when three companies from each competition category are selected to present their business plans to a panel of judges. All those who meet the Educational Pathway requirements will receive a certificate of completion.

Over 15,000 people have attended Liftoff Houston since its inception. Of all the competition finalists, 27 winners have businesses in the fields of retail, goods, labor, consulting, software, hardware, marketplace business, hospitality, tourism, health and fitness, education, finance, technology and logistics. Data gleaned from the 2021 Games show that Liftoff Houston has impacted people who have historically been marginalized. 96% of all participants were people of color, 70% were women, 56% had no college degrees, and 41% had less than her $30,000.
