Celebrate the US Department of Education's Green Ribbon School and the Department of Education's Overall Sustainability Initiative

On July 26, the US Department of Education (ED) honored staff from 27 schools, five school districts, four secondary schools, and one state school at a ceremony in Washington, DC. Wellness practices and hands-on outdoor environmental learning.

ED-GRS honors schools, districts, and higher education institutions by emphasizing the sustainability of cost reduction, health promotion, performance improvement and environmental education practices, and gives more attention to their work. The Byden administration has taken important steps regarding environmental sustainability, climate, environmental health and infrastructure, and new programs related to sustainable schools in other federal agencies are being implemented. Although ED is not licensed for a dedicated environmental education or school infrastructure program, it has endeavored to think creatively about school sustainability, infrastructure, health and environmental education. Over the past year, ED has included:

  • Sustainable, including the release of the White House Tool Kit, which gives schools and districts access to available funds, and cooperation in the release of technical assistance opportunities and planning tools to improve school sustainability and environmental hygiene. Strengthened participation in gender-related inter-ministerial efforts. A broader plan to build a better infrastructure.

  • We appoint ED employees as Special Advisors to Infrastructure and Sustainability to help promote public involvement, programs, coordination, and guidance in light of these issues.
  • 1) Conducted public engagement through webins, telephones, and public listening sessions on environmental impact, infrastructure, and operations. 2) Overall child health and wellness, including environmental hygiene. 3) Environmental, outdoor, climate and sustainability education.

This new infrastructure and sustainability office oversees the proposed national clearinghouse on school infrastructure and sustainability and manages the ongoing ED-GRS certification awards. This office provides the capacity to engage with the efforts of multiple institutions, educators, states, and districts. Previously, this work was done in an informal and voluntary manner, but the office institutionalized the ED structure to advise and coordinate on issues related to climate, sustainability, environment and infrastructure. He led outreach and collaboration between ministries. Clearinghouse provides technical assistance and training to state and local educational institutions on issues related to educational facility planning, design, financing, construction, improvement, operation, and maintenance.
