At the end of last month, Texas Longhorns won the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup for the second consecutive year. It was thanks to the Longhorns’ three spring national championships and four overall titles during the 2021-22 athletic season.
This meant that Texas finished with 1,449.50 points, clearing second place Stanford by nearly 1,000 points (1,352.25). Three Big Ten Schools ranked in the Top 25 of the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup, including 3rd in Michigan (1,245.25), 4th in Ohio State University (1,184.50), and 24th in Wisconsin (795.00).
In the 2021-22 LEAR FIELD Director’s Cup, Iowa won 55th place nationwide. This was the penultimate of the Big Ten teams.
CBS Sports has various rankings that rate the 2021-22 sports season and will make Hawkeye fans happier. CBS Sports’ “Best College Sports” ranking uses a weighted formula that recognizes sports of widespread interest.
All FBS programs are rated on three sports: soccer, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, and two “wild cards”: baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling.
The weighted formula focuses 2.5 times more on soccer and 2.0 times more on men’s basketball than any other sport. Teams that do not finish in the final AP Top 25 of football and play in the bowl will be awarded 62.5 points (25 x 2.5). (Teams that opted out of the bowl game or canceled the post-season contest scored 62.5 points in soccer.) The team that created the men’s NIT scored 20 points (10 x 2) and WNIT. The team will get 10 points. For all titles settled through brackets, such as NCAA tournaments, the total points are based on the number of participants. All other sports champions will receive 100 points in the official national championship created by longtime CBS Sports producer J. Darin Darst. – CBS Sports.
Weighted formulas probably make sense to evaluate college sports. At a minimum, it provides fans with a set of different rankings to use or ignore in discussions about which programs had the best years of exercise between 2021 and 22.
Let’s see how CBS Sports ranked the entire Top 25 and how points were assigned.
