Atlanta United draw scoreless with Chicago

featured image

Atlanta United’s starting eleven solved the problem Pineda faced. It’s a way to have three designated players on the field to keep the defense tight and keep the team playing aggressive. It went on to play three centre-backs in George Campbell, Alan Franco and Juanjo Plata, but Luis Araujo played as a right wing rather than a wing-back and Caleb Wiley as a left wing-back. It was realized by At the top is Joseph Martínez, his first start since coming off the bench in the last two games, and Ronaldo Cisneros, a dual striker with Thiago Armada, making his first start since coming off the bench in the last two games. Santiago Sosa made his fourth appearance. Mateus Rossett starting and playing in central midfield. Rocco Rios Novo started with a goal. Pineda described it as his 4-2-3-1.

Atlanta United moved the ball better in the first half, but only managed to get one of their eight shots on goal. The most egregious mistake came just before half-time when Armada fired a shot from close range into the opposite corner of the goal.

Aiden McFadden came on for Campbell at half-time.

Atlanta United 0, Chicago 0

Chicago took a 1-0 lead with a Xherdan Shaqiri goal in the 54th minute. A video review ruled that he was offside and the goal was taken away, the match ended in a draw and the Five Stripes came to life. Atlanta United are 0-7-3 when their opponents first score this season.

Andrew Gutmann returned from injury as a substitute for Araujo in the 75th minute. Gutmann hasn’t played since injuring his quadruple on May 21 against Nashville.

Dom Dwyer, Franco Ibarra and Marcelino came on for Cisneros, Wiley and Rossett in the 81st minute.

Atlanta United’s defense remained steady in the final minutes with Chicago pressing with numerous crosses and corner kicks.

“As defenders and in the backline, we want a shutout,” Wiley said. “But I think the other important thing is scoring goals. And that was what we were missing today.”

Pineda said he was happy his team were able to stay focused throughout, which has been a problem this season. Chicago scored 21 crosses and he kicked seven corners in this game.

“It was a very bad defeat in a situation coming here after the previous game. It was the last game in my opinion, but we had to try not to lose,” he said. “We needed to be stable and solid. I think the performance was very positive. At this point, we can build something again.”
